Forest School
Forest School is an ethos that promotes self-esteem, creativity, confidence and independence. As a learner inspired, hands-on approach, it enables supported risk-taking, exploration and play in the natural world. Forest School is a multisensory experience offering children opportunities for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning within each activity, making it an ideal intervention for those who find learning challenging in the classroom.
Here at Meath Green Junior School we are extremely fortunate to have our own Forest School on site containing a diverse range of flora and fauna, a fire circle and a pond.
Intervention groups of 12 children are taught by Mrs. Chester-Williams, a teacher and trained Forest School facilitator, skills and topics that fall under the national curriculum, such as plant life and mini beasts. The children are involved with sustainable woodland management, from planting bulbs and making wild seed bombs to making and painting bird boxes, encouraging respect for the environment. Motivational activities are designed to promote confidence, encourage perseverance, build resilience and develop physical motor skills.
Children work collaboratively on group projects developing their verbal and non-verbal communication skills and are encouraged to reflect on their weekly experiences, promoting an opportunity for self-awareness. Forest School interventions last for between 4 and 6 weeks and take place on a Friday. Assessment takes place through observation, pupil voice questionnaire and by pupil outcome.
